US Open Giant Killers Melanie Oudin, who defeated three former world Top 3 players including #1 Maria Sharapova, and, John Isner, who beat Wimbledon finalist Andy Roddick, and, the world #1 doubles team The Bryan Brothers storm into Baltimore on Wednesday, December 9 for the BCF Tennis Challenge presented by The Baltimore Sun.
Quick Start tournament was held at Montgomery College in Rockville on Saturday, August 22.
There were 25 total kids playing on five 36’ courts for the 8-unders and three 60’ courts for the 9-10 year old division. After an hour of play rain hit and washed it out.
On Sunday, 20 of the 25 kids came back and played another 1 ½ hours of tennis. All the parents and kids said they had a great time. All players received water bottles and Frisbees and medals were awarded to the top 2 in each age group.
A record six Maryland District champions will be vying for upcoming 2009 USTA League National Championship titles after each won their respective division at the Mid-Atlantic Adult League Section Championships held last month in Newport News, VA.
Maryland dominated in the 3.0 and 4.0 men’s and women’s divisions as well as taking the 4.5 and 5.0 men’s crowns. Congratulations to the Montgomery and Howard county teams and their captains. As it has for many years, the Maryland District will help the teams defray a small portion of the cost of attending nationals with some financial support.
After winning the Maryland State Tournament and Mid-Atlantic Sectional Tournament, the JTT 14U Intermediate team from Churchville, MD (14U-1) placed 8th in the very competitive JTT National Tournament held in Mobile, AL, on October 22 – 25, 2009.

The USTA Technical Committee announced that Green Spring Racquet Club will receive one of the 2009 USTA Outstanding Facility awards on Sunday, September 6 during the USTA Semiannual Meeting in New York City. Previous Maryland facility winners include Baltimore Fitness and Tennis and The Tennis Center at College Park
Award categories include small public tennis centers with 2-10 courts; large public Tennis Centers with 11 or more courts and/or stadiums; educational institutions; and private facilities that support the USTA and other growth of the game programs and membership is open to the public.
Alysia Rodgers, a USTA Junior player, believes that by actively playing Junior tournaments, experiencing the joys of winning and learning from losses, made her a better player and offered her the chance to play college-level tennis. While she had an excellent academic record, her chances of acceptance were enhanced by being sought after by the college tennis team. All in all, her Junior USTA experience was life-transforming!
U.S. Women Win Silver at World Team Tennis Championship.
Mary Boswell, had a great run in the World Team Championships as a member of the U.S. Queen's Cup. She had a hand in several deciding matches.
